Thomas S. Wootton High School held its final homecoming dance in the current Potomac building Oct. 2. The Student Government Association (SGA) chose an "Eras" theme to mark the school's last year before relocating.
The glow-in-the-dark dance, called GloCo, is Wootton's signature twist on homecoming. This year's version carried extra weight: the Montgomery County Board of Education voted 7-1 on March 26 to move Wootton's staff and students to the upcoming Crown High School in Gaithersburg for the 2027-2028 school year, as Bethesda Magazine reported. The current building would likely become a holding school, according to Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) officials.
That looming move shaped the SGA's planning, according to a Wootton Common Sense report on the effort. The game and dance landed in early October rather than mid-month, compressing the timeline. Senior SGA member Zikora Okeke said the earlier schedule meant the entire team had to mobilize quickly.
Every detail required administrative sign-off. Okeke said the SGA had to request the space, pay for security and get approval for tables, chairs and every purchase.
SGA divided into sub-committees for advertising, decorations, banners, outreach and the pep rally. Members hand-painted decorations for each grade level's theme. The SGA planned a DJ, an inflatable obstacle course, poker tables in the dance studio and a music scavenger hunt, the Wootton Common Sense reported.
Senior SGA member Genevieve Bulles said the "Eras" concept was meant to honor the school's history. "SGA wanted to celebrate Wootton's final year and we thought that it would be best to do an 'Eras' theme to celebrate Wootton's final ride," Bulles told the student newspaper.
The milestone resonated beyond the dance floor. In a September Wootton Common Sense article about seniors painting their parking spots, senior class president Manasa Iyer said the building's final year pushed seniors to ensure that tradition happened. Senior Max Gomez told the student newspaper that knowing it was everyone's last year in the building changed the feel of the event.
Tickets cost $10 online and $20 at the door, according to the school's website. The attendance zone and programming changes that will relocate Wootton take effect for the 2027-2028 school year.
