Churchill rolled over Wootton 41-0 on Friday, Oct. 23, turning the Patriots' final home football game into a lopsided shutout.
The loss dropped Wootton to 1-7 on the season and 0-4 at home. Churchill improved to 7-1 and extended its winning streak to three games.
The Bulldogs jumped ahead early. According to Wootton's student newspaper, Common Sense, Churchill scored within the first 15 minutes to take a 7-0 lead. The Patriots never recovered, and the final margin ballooned to 41 points.
The game carried extra weight for Wootton seniors. The Montgomery County Board of Education approved a resolution on March 26 to close Wootton and move students to Crown High School in fall 2027. More than 300 families have since filed an appeal with the Maryland State Board of Education challenging the decision, Fox 5 reported in April. The current status of that appeal is unclear.
Senior Kiki Agembiese told Common Sense she was motivated for the final home game and wanted to support her community and show school spirit.
"It's annoying to be constantly losing, but also bittersweet because this is our last time we're going to experience it," Agembiese said.
Wootton's lone win this season came Sept. 4, a 47-0 rout of Rockville. Since then, the Patriots have lost seven straight, including a one-point overtime defeat to Magruder, 21-20, on Oct. 2.
Churchill, ranked No. 39 in Maryland by MaxPreps, has outscored opponents 208-106 this season. The Bulldogs' only loss came Oct. 2 at Quince Orchard, 41-0.
Both teams close the regular season Friday, Oct. 30. Wootton travels to Clarksburg, which enters at 4-4 after a 66-0 win over Watkins Mill. Churchill heads to Paint Branch, which stands at 5-3.
