For the first time, U.S. News incorporated data collected directly from state education agencies by RTI International, alongside U.S. Department of Education data. The updated methodology measures student performance in reading and math across all proficiency levels while accounting for student background and absolute performance on state assessments, according to a U.S. News press release.

Eric Brooks, U.S. News director of education data analysis, said the new approach using direct state data "gives families, educators and community leaders an even clearer view of academic achievement."

No public statement from Herbert Hoover's principal or from MCPS about the school's No. 14 ranking has appeared in public records. Families can view the full rankings at usnews.com/education/k12.
