Two Potomac schools picked up statewide honors in separate recognitions announced Tuesday, Oct. 20.
Beverly Farms Elementary was one of 23 schools across Maryland named a 2026-2027 Blue Ribbon School by Gov. Wes Moore, according to WJLA. The same day, U.S. News & World Report released its 2027 Best Middle Schools rankings, placing Cabin John Middle School at No. 10 in Maryland, as The MoCo Show reported.
Beverly Farms, which serves 526 students, was joined by two other Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) campuses in the Blue Ribbon class: Somerset Elementary in Chevy Chase and Travilah Elementary in North Potomac, MyMCMedia reported. Three private Catholic schools in the county also earned the designation.
The Blue Ribbon program recognizes schools for high scores on state and national assessments and for closing achievement gaps, according to WJLA. This year's class of 23 was a significant jump from seven schools recognized last year.
MCPS Superintendent Thomas Taylor praised the schools' staff. "These Blue Ribbon honors demonstrate what is possible when intentional instructional support aligns with the professional judgment and talent of our teachers and school staff," Taylor said, according to MyMCMedia.
County Executive Marc Elrich wrote on X that the three MCPS Blue Ribbon schools were "among 12 public schools statewide recognized for academic achievement and efforts to close achievement gaps."
On the middle school side, Cabin John's No. 10 finish put it among seven MCPS schools in the state's top 40, according to The MoCo Show. Thomas W. Pyle Middle in Bethesda ranked highest among county schools at No. 4. Herbert Hoover Middle, which serves Potomac families, came in at No. 14.
The rankings covered more than 24,000 middle schools nationwide, with schools scored at the state level rather than nationally, according to The MoCo Show.
Both honors land during a strong stretch for Potomac-area schools. As we reported Oct. 21, Cold Spring Elementary ranked first in Maryland for math proficiency in the same U.S. News release.
Beverly Farms, Somerset and Travilah will receive their Blue Ribbon banners, flags and award citations at the Maryland State Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 8, in Baltimore.
