Sherwood shut out the Wootton Patriots 35-0 on Oct. 15 in Rockville, dropping Wootton to 1-6 and extending the team's losing streak to six games.
The Patriots have not won since their Sept. 4 opener, a 47-0 rout of Rockville, according to MaxPreps. They have been outscored 191-125 through seven games and sit 164th in the MaxPreps state rankings.
Sherwood, now 6-1, climbed to No. 11 in the High School on SI Maryland Top 25 state rankings published Oct. 20. The Warriors' only loss this season was a 9-0 defeat to undefeated Quince Orchard.
The result sets up a Week 8 rivalry game between the two Potomac-area schools. Churchill (6-1) travels to Wootton on Friday, Oct. 23, at 6:30 p.m. for a non-region game.
The Bulldogs enter on a two-game winning streak after edging Seneca Valley 14-13 on Oct. 16 and blanking Gaithersburg 35-0 on Oct. 9, according to MaxPreps. Churchill's lone loss was a 41-0 defeat at Quince Orchard on Oct. 2. The Bulldogs are 4-0 at home, rank 41st in Maryland and sit second in the Class 4A West region.
Wootton's schedule has been unforgiving. A one-point overtime loss to Magruder on Oct. 2, 21-20, was the closest the Patriots came to a second win. Losses to Damascus (42-7), Whitman (28-14), Walter Johnson (13-10) and Richard Montgomery (52-27) followed the opening victory.
Playoff seeding is on the line across Montgomery County with two regular-season games remaining. Bethesda Magazine highlighted several Week 8 matchups with postseason implications, including No. 11 Sherwood hosting Damascus (5-2) on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Sandy Spring.
Quince Orchard, ranked No. 5 in the state at 7-0, routed Clarksburg 55-0 on Oct. 19 and heads to Northwest on Oct. 23.
After Friday's game against Churchill, Wootton closes the regular season at Clarksburg on Oct. 30. Churchill finishes at Paint Branch the same night.
