A mother was struck and killed while crossing the street with her young son near Chapman Avenue and Twinbrook Parkway in Rockville on Monday, Aug. 17.

Rockville City Police and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service personnel were dispatched to the intersection at approximately 8:25 p.m., according to the Montgomery County Police Department. Both pedestrians were transported to a nearby trauma center. The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital just before midnight. Her son was hospitalized with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

The driver stayed at the scene.

The vehicle slid onto an embankment after the collision, according to Patch. The driver is cooperating with investigators.

The MCPD Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating. Police have not released information about what led to the crash or whether the driver could face charges.

The woman's name has not been released pending notification of her family. The child's age has also not been disclosed.

The crash follows a deadly stretch for pedestrians across the Washington, D.C., region. Fox 5 reported four pedestrians were killed in separate crashes over the weekend, including a Metrobus fatality in Fairfax County, a crosswalk death in Arlington, a hit in Northeast D.C. and a fatal strike in Dumfries.
