Potomac commuters who rely on Grosvenor-Strathmore, the closest Red Line station to the community, are roughly halfway through a two-month construction shutdown that won't wrap up until Sept. 6.
Red Line trains have not run between North Bethesda and Friendship Heights since Monday, July 6. Free shuttle buses are serving all affected stations in between, and free parking remains available at both Grosvenor-Strathmore and North Bethesda during the closure, according to MoCoShow.
Metro posted a progress update on its X account Sunday, Aug. 9, sharing construction photos and describing the platform work at Grosvenor-Strathmore as moving right along. Crews are reconstructing the station's platforms while workers at Bethesda station are building a second mezzanine and new escalators that will eventually connect Metrorail to the future Purple Line.
A third project is running simultaneously: maintenance of the elevated rail structure over Rockville Pike between Grosvenor-Strathmore and Medical Center.
The shutdown has not been painless. Metro General Manager Randy Clarke acknowledged rider frustration at a late-July board meeting after a broken water pipe compounded delays. "No one had a good experience on the Red Line," Clarke said at the July 24 meeting, according to NBC Washington. "Basically between Metro Center and Friendship Heights, let alone all the way up to Shady Grove."
WTOP reported that some riders with mobility issues have found the replacement shuttle buses difficult to board, despite Metro's claim that all shuttle service is ADA accessible.
Montgomery County's Department of Transportation has added a Glenmont Express Shuttle as an extra travel option during the closure, though specific route details and schedules were not immediately available.
The broader Red Line modernization plan carries an estimated price tag of $1.5 billion, and Metro says it still needs additional funding. As we reported Aug. 4, the Purple Line itself recently reached Bethesda in its first live wire tests.
Future disruptions are already on the calendar. Fox 5 reported Metro plans single-tracking between U Street and Georgia Avenue in winter 2026 and an extended shutdown between Twinbrook and Shady Grove in summer 2027.
The current shutdown is scheduled to end Sept. 6. Potomac riders can board free shuttles at Grosvenor-Strathmore or drive to North Bethesda station, where Red Line service continues north toward Shady Grove.
