Glenstone, the free contemporary art museum at 12100 Glen Road, turns 20 on Sept. 30. The museum has grown from a small gallery into a destination that draws more than 100,000 visitors a year to its post-World War II art collection, trails and outdoor sculptures, according to The Banner.
Admission is always free.
Founded by Emily Wei Rales and Mitchell Rales, Glenstone opened Sept. 30, 2006. Its Pavilions building, a concrete-and-glass structure that lets natural light pour through the galleries, opened in 2018 and reopened in March 2025 after an 18-month renovation.
How to get in
Glenstone is open Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Timed-entry tickets are not required but strongly recommended. Visits can be scheduled on the half hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Glenstone's booking page. Tickets are released on the first of every month for the next 60 days, so slots fill quickly.
Walk-ins may be accommodated, but the museum strongly recommends booking ahead, according to a washington.org guide. Educators and veterans qualify for a Guaranteed Entry program. Riders on Montgomery County's Ride On bus route 301 also receive guaranteed entry.
Free parking is available on-site. The museum is about 40 minutes from downtown Washington by car.
What to expect
Glenstone's collection focuses on modern and contemporary art from the mid-20th century forward. The grounds include trails, outdoor sculptures and a cafe tucked into the forest. An Arrival Hall bookstore sells books, limited-edition posters and art-related gifts.
No guided tours of indoor galleries are offered. The museum hosts daily Nature Walks led by guides and grounds staff instead. Guides dress entirely in gray and station themselves throughout the property, ready to discuss visitors' interpretations of the art.
Valentina Nahon, Glenstone's senior director of public engagement, has described the experience as uncrowded, contemplative and unhurried, according to The Banner.
Photography is not allowed inside the museum. Guests may photograph outdoor artworks for personal use. Visitors must be 12 or older, and minors under 17 need an accompanying adult. Pets are not permitted aside from service animals.
Community roots
Francisca Moraga Lopez, Glenstone's community engagement manager, and her team host more than 4,000 students and educators each year for guided and self-guided visits. They also coordinate programming and partnerships across Montgomery County.
"The Community Engagement Department was founded with the goal of connecting and engaging with Glenstone's surrounding communities beyond our wooden fence, and I'm lucky enough to lead that effort," Moraga Lopez said in an October 2025 interview published by Glenstone.
