A national program offering free Uber rides to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking now operates at the Prince George's County Family Justice Center in Upper Marlboro, the only confirmed site in the Washington, D.C., region.
The program serves Prince George's County, not Montgomery County. Whether Montgomery County residents can access it through cross-jurisdictional referrals has not been confirmed.
Uber's Hope Rides program, launched in July 2025 with Alliance for HOPE International, hit its one-year mark in late July with more than 3,000 rides and 30,000 miles logged nationwide, according to Uber's newsroom. It has grown from 18 pilot sites to 30 Family Justice Centers across 17 states. Alliance for HOPE International named the Prince George's County center in a July 10 post recognizing participating locations.
"It's one thing to know that a resource is there, but if you can't get to it, what good is it?" said Dr. Denise McCain, director of the Prince George's County Family Justice Center.
McCain said the partnership with Uber has extended beyond rides. "It's 24/7. People need resources. They need access to resources and even food. So, we've been able to have Uber Eats deliver food. We have many stay-at-home moms that needed things and just basic necessities that we've been able to provide through this partnership with Uber over the past year. Thousands and thousands of miles where survivors are getting access to those lifelines."
The need is real locally. Nearly 3,000 domestic violence final protective order hearings were held in Montgomery County courts in 2023, according to Court Watch Montgomery. Montgomery County's own Family Justice Center in Rockville serves roughly 2,000 individuals per year and runs a separate GEICO-funded "Ride to Safety" transportation program through its foundation.
Under Hope Rides, staff at participating centers use a dashboard to request rides for clients. Survivors do not need the Uber app. Safety features include an option for women to request women drivers, GPS monitoring, an in-app 911 button and privacy protections that conceal pickup and drop-off addresses from driver trip history.
The Prince George's County Family Justice Center is at 14757 Main Street, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772, open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call (301) 780-8008. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24/7 at 1-800-799-7233.
